In
a Digital World, All is Not Lost
by Ann Pynnonen, i3 Sales Specialist
As
every faithful CSI viewer knows, it’s not always
the paper trail that gets the bad guy in the
end, it’s often the electronic trail. i3’s
Brandon Fannon is well aware of this and is one
of an elite group of professionals capable and
certified in Digital Forensics. Digital or
Computer Forensics, is a branch of forensic
science pertaining to legal evidence found in
computers and digital storage mediums such as
PCs, laptops, cameras, flash drives and servers.
There
are two branches of this emerging business -
Digital Forensic Analysis and Data Recovery. In
Digital Forensic Analysis, the critical element
is recovering the data as evidence, protecting
the chain of custody, and tracking forensic
imaging. Brandon uses a combination of software,
hardware and expertise to uncover and analyze
hidden and deleted electronic evidence that can
prove vital in many legal proceedings.
Digital/Computer Forensic Analysis is used in
cases of suspected computer fraud,
Email/Internet abuse cases, harassment and
discrimination investigations, misappropriation
of proprietary information, pornography
investigation, breach of contract cases,
employment disputes, intellectual property
theft, and insurance fraud. Brandon recently
worked on a case involving an employee who had
deleted incriminating data from a PC. Brandon
was able to detect the deletion and rebuild the
digital bits into the original pictures, chat
logs, and other important information the client
requested.
In
Data Recovery, the goal is more straight forward
yet equally challenging - to recover data that
was thought to be lost due to human error or
mechanical hardware failure. Who hasn’t had that
sinking feeling that they inadvertently and
permanently deleted a critical document, a data
file, or image? Using the same tools used in
digital forensics, Brandon can recover
information from drives from several different
operating systems such as Microsoft Windows
Desktop and Server Platforms, Macintosh
Platforms, and Unix/Linux Platforms.

I Have
Seen The Future & It’s Exciting
i3 Visits Microsoft’s Campus in Redmond
by Michael Ritsema
Recently, I
had the opportunity to spend two days on Microsoft’s
campus in Redmond Washington with 10 of my industry
peers. I’ve been to the technology promised land and it
is vast!
Years of
training and certifications, being a member of an
invaluable peer group, and being a long standing
Microsoft Certified and Gold Partner helped us get this
rare look into the software giant’s organization. Having
this type of one on one access in a small group was very
rewarding and gave i3 great insight into Microsoft’s
future plans and how they can benefit our customers.
During my
visit, we were able to tour the Microsoft Home of the
Future which was absolutely amazing. I have seen the
future and it looks a lot like Facebook, Skype, VISA,
your cell phone, and all your remote controls all merged
into one! You think we are wired now? Take a look 5
years down the road upon which the technology in the
home of the future is based. If you’re like me and
cautious about “putting yourself out there” on the web,
hang on for some dramatic changes in the next decade.
Imagine:
-
Someone’s
at your door while you’re at the grocery store. Your
cell phone lights up with video of your neighbor at
the door. You can choose to talk to the person right
now. You can choose to let them in the house, too! .
. . Because . . .
-
Your cell
phone opens your garage door and unlocks your doors
– no keys!
-
Your
personal cell phone tagged settings change the
music, video, lighting and art in your home to suit
your personal tastes!
-
Your home
recognizes who is in what room through voice
recognition and changes the atmosphere in the room
you’re in.
-
You can
change the entire color, atmosphere, pictures and
decoration of a guest room to suit the guest.
-
Your photo
album on the wall updates by the minute based on
activities that your extended family is involved in
(looks like massive Facebook or photo site
connectivity)!
-
Your
personal settings know from postings on little
Johnny’s school website that he is studying
astronomy in science so the living room will display
pictures of our solar system on the walls and post
leading research on the subject.
-
Your
shared calendars allow you to synchronize
communication and schedules seamlessly.
